Ian, its normally down to the contribution they have made over the years to the club. For example, our outdoor club has several members that have been stalwarts in helping out, cutting the greens, club house maintenence, coaching and all for free. Being a club member for 20/30 years and giving of youself for a club, deserves some recognition. It might save a retired member only £50 a year, but it's not about the money, its a thank you. 😃
I agree totally with Richard. It is not about the money, and we only award life memberships to members who have made a significant contribution to the club for a number of years. We do cover their yearly fees as part of the award, and I believe this is much appreciated, and their names are posted on an honours board. The number of such awards we give is of course very limited - I believe we have only made about four such awards in the 20 odd years I have been a member of the club, and only two of our life members are still with us. As a club we could not afford too many such awards.
Totally agree with both Ian and Alan. To be a Life Member of a Club is an honour that should only be awarded for exceptional commitment and service over a very long period, otherwise it downgrades the honour.
Such an award provides free membership to the Club in recognition of that dedication and service so, as alan mentions, it has financial implications.
The Club committee should deliberate carefully over any nomination for the award of Life Membership and be confident their decision would be fully supported by the membership.
Hi Ian, Do RAFA Bowls have any life members? I believe they have club life members but that doesn't effect the bowls section. I do agree with other comments life membership should only be given to those who have given long and loyal service to a club and I also agree it is a thank you and not about money.
Thanks. The RAFA Bowls do not have any Life Members currently. However consideration is being given to one individual. Better not name them here in case they look at the website forum.
